The summer youth program that I run is over and now I'm just wandering around the gardens by my lonesome to harvest what's left for the mobile markets on Saturdays. Concord grapes, yard long noodle beans, and potatoes are on the harvest lists these days. I'm also gearing up for some winter garden planning by attempting to follow a crop rotation while learning the Latin vegetable family names.

Drawn the Road Again
This blog makes me want to adventure to the west with my man, a sketch pad, water colors, and a camera. I know it'll happen soon enough.

Asymmetrical Patterns
Soooo...if you take colorful images of the same or similar thing and compile them onto one canvas, you can pretty much come up with something pleasing to the eye. Found these here.

This guy conjures the bizarre and the beautiful with his textures and slightly grotesque figures. I love them! Reminds me of Edward Gorey-meets-Christian Lacroix on the set of Children of the Corn.

September

Summer weather left over night. I already miss wearing shorts and eating coconut popsicles. On the bright side, I did have my first mulled cider craving of the season. I worked too much all summer and I'm still working too much. Hopefully things will ripen up again when my travel itch gets scratched this spring.

Urban sketchers

Ch'ng Kian Kiean

Veronica Lawlor
Sometimes I like to check out urbansketchers for inspiration to draw my surroundings. I like the styles of these two artists. The line work captures mood, movement and mystery enough to look twice.

Lately I've been busy acting in a film about a north korean dissident artist who washes ashore a California beach, experiences the western art world, and tries to make sense of her painful experience as a defector/surviver through an art installation of her own making. We watched a documentary on north korea to ground us in our subject and the whole filming experience got me thinking about what a privilege it is to live in a world where free speech is honored.

Cultural Maps and Drawing from Life
Lately I've been thinking about creating a series of drawings on the history of a place and its cultural waves through time, much like Rebecca Solnit's Infinite City: A San Francisco Atlas, or Judith Schalansky's Atlas of Remote Islands. In these works, the illustrations, typefaces, stories and research are seamless and create worlds that I can get lost in all day. Another inspiration, Jennifer New's Drawing from Life: The Journal as Art, makes me feel better about doodling in my journals.
